long beach peninsula
This building was designed as an artist’s retreat. Two invited artists “take up residence” in this pastoral setting. The design of the building and the landscape contribute to the inspirational quality of the place.
The design utilizes simplicity in both spatial layout and material choice. There is a main gathering space for exchange of ideas, eating together and relaxing. This space is “grand” in height and also spills out into the landscape to connect with the outdoors, and blend the outside with the inside, and the unique window design contributes to the “creative spirit” of the place. Connected to the living areas by an enclosed translucent breezeway lie the sleeping quarters. There are two bedrooms and a shared bath in this two story form. One bedroom is the owner’s; the other is for the artists in residence. All share the bath, the kitchen and the common spaces. The spaces are designed so that light and shadow play on the interior spaces, providing pattern as well as connection with the outdoors. The building is about art and artists, and the design reflects that.
