The project aimed to transform an existing dark cabin into a home for a couple looking to retire to this small island in the San Juans.
The small rooms of the existing cabin were reconfigured to create a simplified program with a large open main space and a master suite. The existing structure created a low ceiling so to achieve a brighter light filled space; the windows were pushed high to the ceiling to bring in the maximum amount of light. In addition, skylights were placed to bring light deep into the space.
The house is used by two people for much of the year, but to accommodate larger parties on the site the scope of this project also included a detached bunk house for family and guests. This second L shaped structure is situated so that an outdoor kitchen and living space fills the space between the two buildings.
