This project is nestled into a second growth cedar forest on a 10 acre parcel on Whidbey Island. Four structures in all, the buildings consist of two artist's studios, a house and a garage. The buildings are strategically placed on the site's high point, focused outward toward the surrounding gulleys. The buildings are expressed as simple, industrial 'objects' in the landscape. They have tough industrial shells that are infilled with colorful elements to denote entry and serve as a complement to the dense woods. Polycarbonate clerestory windows bring in diffuse light into the spaces, pleasantly obscuring the landscape into an artistic abstraction. Simplicity, color and concept all come together to create this unique haven in the woods.
