Situated at the toe of a steep bluff, the Hillside site is strewn with gigantic, rugged boulders. At an initial design meeting, the owners shared a sketch showing a house layout that literally wrapped its arms around a large boulder that sits at the crest of the hill. PBW addressed the tricky, steep grade by creating three ascending levels: A garage and lower entry at the ground level, a bedroom wing mid-way up the grade, and a kitchen/living/dining space at the top of the hill. As requested, the house embraces the big boulder, which is the focal point of a protected outdoor room.
